The Galactic Empire was the dictatorial government that replaced the Galactic Republic at the conclusion of the Clone Wars. Supreme Chancellor Sheev Palpatine, secretly the Sith Lord Darth Sidious, formed the Empire in 19 BBY after wiping out the Jedi Order and declared himself Emperor.
The rise of the Empire was spearheaded by Palpatine's new apprentice, fallen Jedi Knight, Anakin Skywalker―known from that point on as Darth Vader―who helped his new master hunt down and destroy the Jedi. The culmination of Palpatine's plan to impose total Sith rule over the galaxy, the Galactic Empire reigned as a totalitarian regime which few dared oppose until it was finally defeated by the Rebellion. However, former Nightsister Morgan Elsbeth refused to relinquish her command over the local systems and continued to be an Imperial.
