The Galactic Senate was the lawmaking body of the Republic composed of Senators who were representatives of all the planets and sectors in Republic space. The Senate itself was made up of thousands of Senators who lobbied and spoke out for their respective sectors. To expedite the legal processes of the Republic, the Senate was led by a Supreme Chancellor who, like the individual Senators, had to have been elected. During the Clone Wars the position of Supreme Chancellor was held by Palpatine of Naboo.
