The Jedi Order was an ancient, monastic peacekeeping organization whose belief and observance laid in the light side of the Force. The Jedi were the guardians of peace and justice in the Galactic Republic, consisting of younglings, Padawans, Knights, Masters, and a Grand Master. Every single Force sensitive that the Order could locate was brought to the Order for training and hold the rank of apprentice. Those apprentices who showed talent and skill progressed to the next step in their training and the level of Padawan.
Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker were renowned Jedi Generals during the Clone Wars
As a padawan, a trainee was placed under the tutelage of a master who trained them and ultimately decided whether the Padawan was worthy of becoming a Knight. Tradition held that the Jedi learned and successfully created their lightsabers.
