Luke Skywalker was a human male who was the child of senator Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker, a former Jedi Knight. Like his father and his twin sister, Leia, Luke was force-sensitive. He was born in 19 BBY two days after the formation of the Galactic Empire. His mother, Padmé Amidala, died in childbirth, and his father, Anakin Skywalker, became a Sith, so he and his sister, Leia Amidala Skywalker were hidden separately so that the Galactic Empire, the Emperor, and Darth Vader (their father, the former Anakin Skywalker) would not find out about them. Luke was adopted by his step-uncle and aunt, Owen and Beru Lars, so Luke grew up as a moisture farmer on Tatooine. Obi-Wan Kenobi also went into exile on Tatooine to protect the jedi's "new hope."
