Pau'ans, also known as Utapauns, were gaunt, long-limbed humanoids from Utapau. They dwelled in their planet's sinkholes, and tamed the local varactyl for riding. Due to their long life-span, they were also known as the Ancients.

Utapau people

Pau'ans on Utapau.

The Pau'ans are a race of tall, gray-skinned humanoids native to the planet Utapau. It was believed that the Pau'ans, like their cousins the Utai, are descended from the colonists who first settled Utapau, at least 57,000 years before the Clone Wars. For many generations, the Pau'ans lived on the surface of the planet, separate from the Utai. They were eventually driven underground by the increasingly arid environment of the planet's surface, in the wake of the climate change that caused scouring winds to blow across its surface. Although the Pau'ans make up just thirty percent of Utapau's population, their size and longevity has given them the ability to dominate the rulership classes of the planet. The average Pau'an has a lifespan of more than 700 years, and prefers to eat raw meat. Double rows of sharp teeth fill the upper and lower jaws of the average Pau'an, allowing them to rip apart their food. Interestingly, Pau'ans prefer the darkness of the underground cities, despite their natural history as surface-dwellers. Because of their long lifespans, the Pau'ans are often referred to as Ancients.

The head of the Pau'an displays evolutionary adaptations to living on the planet's surface, including vestigial ear-disks that lack lobes which might be damaged by wind-blown sand. The appearance of the average Pau'an instill fright or fear in many beings, despite the fact that most Pau'ans are among the most friendly races in the galaxy.
